Philadelphia State Hospital (PSH). Anna was transferred from EPPI into Philadelphia State Hospital in December of 1984, at the age of 24. Known as "Byberry", this state hospital proved to be infamous for the extent to which it's patients were violently abused and neglected. While Anna was there, she secretly reported incidences of staff abuse of herself and of other patients. Her reports eventually led to an investigation resulting in permanent closure of the hospital.

During the two years she was a PSH, Anna continued to draw and paint prolifically. Her works were commissioned by staff, at times exhibited, and once used for the cover of a hospital sponsored conference. Her portraits of others were sought by both patients and staff. She developed an intense love relationship with a young man, a patient who, like her, had been severely abused in childhood. She treasured the few pictures and bits of news she received of her daughter, sent her gifts and letters, and continued to hope she would see her. At the same time she was plagued by unwanted thoughts of sexually abusing her and fear and guilt that her child would be harmed as she was and that she was therefore evil for having given birth to her. She continued to injure herself and made several serious attempts at suicide. She was often restrained for days at a time.
