In August of 1990, Anna's mother's funded position came to an end and she moved to California to be with her partner and Anna's two sisters and younger brother. That fall, Anna was to enter a new transitional residential program which it was thought would help prepare her to live in a supported community setting close to her family in California. The transitional program was delayed however, and in January 1991, her older brother John also moved to California. Anna then saved all her money from the janitorial job and in April of 1991 ran away from Norristown State Hospital. She purchased a one way Greyhound bus ticket and traveled cross-country to join her mother, brothers and sisters in California.
