Santa Clara County, California and Napa State Hospital
While Anna was in route to San Francisco, her mother and younger brother arranged placement for her in Permahousing, a residential program in Santa Clara County whose Executive Director had some training in trauma. Anna first stopped for several days in St. Louis to see her father and his family. At times during that visit, an Aunt reported, she talked obsessively about sexual matters. Anna spoke later of attempting to discuss with one individual in St. Louis a certain way he had touched her in the past which had made her feel uncomfortable, and of his explosively angry response to her description of his behavior.

She said she had wanted him to know that he should not feel guilty as she had heard of much worse things, but that he became so angry "he scared me", she said, "I was afraid he was going to hit me or something." She had hoped to see her daughter, now almost seven years old. But as had been the case since giving her up for adoption, she was not allowed to. She resumed her travel to California.

Unable at that point to contain her fear, intrusive thoughts and "voices", Anna was taken off the bus and treated in emergency services. She then traveled by plane to San Francisco, accompanied by her aunt J. She arrived mid-April, 1991.
