A year after Anna moved to Sheppard, she became pregnant by a young man who was a patient at the hospital. She accepted the fact that she was not able to care for a child, but decided to have the baby after her aunt G and uncle G (father's side) said they wanted to adopt and raise her child with their other seven children in St. Louis. They promised to visit Anna regularly over the years so she could see and visit with the child as it grew up. Adoption plans went forward. Anna carried her baby full term without complications. She gave birth to her daughter M at the local hospital, on May 1, 1984. She was awake for the birth. With her were the attending physician and two nurses who had worked with her closely during her pregnancy at Sheppard hospital. Her own mother arrived just minutes after the birth. Anna visited the nursery constantly, and for two days was allowed to visit, see and sometimes to hold her baby.

The night before her aunt and uncle were to arrive, she crumbled and wept with her mother and her Aunt Caroline, recognizing that the following morning she would be losing her child and the happiness she had experienced for those two days. The next morning however, Anna talked with the lawyers, signed all the necessary papers without objection, and released her child to her aunt and uncle.
